Lloyds Banking Group
As the UK's largest Digital, Retail and Commercial bank we realise that our data is a significant business differentiator and plays a pivotal role in achieving our sustainable growth ambitions.
We're looking to further adopt sophisticated approaches to how we utilise data to interact with and service our customers backed with a £3bn investment programme.
Our team:
The FX Digitisation feature teams (part of the Sales & Trading Lab in the Markets Platform) is responsible for a number of applications that are used to price, quote, book and process FX trades.
We support a wide range of applications including the following, some of which you could be involved in developing as part of this role;
  • Arena is an On-line Single Bank Portal with FX and Money Market trading capabilities, trade blotter, news and charting components.
  • Markets Manager is the core of the bank’s FX Sales & Trading platform and provides trade entry, pricing & booking; trade blotters; trader/sales workflow and regulatory controls
  • EDM holds the static data required by FX systems including trading rules, margins, counterparty information and currency static data
  • IFX provides FX rates to various international payment channels. It also has a web front-end used by sales & trading users to manage margins, fees and risk manage the FX exposure resulting from these FX transactions. As part of a new initiative (currently in development) it will also be providing FX rates for credit & debit card and ATM transactions.
  • Rosetta is a new client-facing FX risk management system built in partnership with a 3rd party Fintech. As part of this we are building a number of new microservices to expose interfaces to provide streaming rates and trade details. These will be a combination of Rest APIs and real time updates (over Kafka).
  • FX Pricer is a C#/WPF desktop application used by sales, trading & risk users to price, analyse and book FX Option trades & structures
We work within a highly regulated environment, using modern Agile software development lifecycles, DevOps and CI/CD.
What is our Technology Stack?
Our system largely use the Spring Boot framework hosting Java services on Linux servers. The Netflix stack (Eureka, Zuul) is used for service discovery, load balancing and routing. Akka is used for concurrency & distribution. Hazelcast is used for caching. Kafka is used for the messaging backbone. JPA (with Hibernate) is used to connect to backend databases.
Web front-ends are built using JavaScript, ReactJS, Redux, Node.js and Typescript.
Maven, Yarn and NPM are used for build/deployment; Git for source control; UCD for deployment & system start-up/shutdown.
What will your role entail?
You’ll be working in a team of software engineers and other multidisciplinary staff within our markets function, and also interact directly with our front office traders if needed when called in by the 3rd line support team.
You’ll design and implement new features to our existing applications, plus develop technical improvements and upgrades of core components of our application suite.
You’ll also give 3rd line support of our applications, working with first line support when they need our help investigating production issues or queries.
You’ll complete code & design reviews of work done by other developers on the team.
There are no line management responsibilities as a senior engineer but you’ll coach and mentor more junior members of the team.
What do we need to see in your application;
We'd welcome applicants from diverse organisational, cultural, and technological backgrounds and believe this is critical to success. This is a senior role in a niche area, so as a minimum to be considered for shortlisting we need to see evidence of the following in your CV;
  • Java – including development of latency sensitive services and in-depth knowledge of threading & garbage collection to tune all aspects of the code’s performance
  • Test Driven Development and unit testing with JUnit
  • Spring Boot
  • Kafka (or similar queueing software - MQ for example)
  • Designing & implementing secure REST APIs
  • Hazelcast experience
  • Knowledge of Object Orientated (OO) design patterns and SOLID design principles
  • Agile working experience including Continuous Integration systems (ideally Jenkins)
  • Software version control systems (ideally Git)
Ideally we would preference applicants with experience of 3rd line support for Front Office Sales & Trading staff. Also if you have knowledge of the FX cash business – how spots, forwards, swaps and time options are priced & risk managed, that would be advantageous.
Why else would you want to work with us?
We’ve got lots of good strategic initiatives to be involved in, and are well funded and in the first year of our current three year technology strategy.
We’ve had a big increase in scope, and are also in the process of migrating to cloud.
We’re simply committed to building an inclusive environment where all our colleagues can be themselves and succeed on merit.
At Lloyds Banking Group, we're driven by a clear purpose; to help Britain prosper. Across the Group, our colleagues are focused on making a difference to customers, businesses and communities. With us you'll have a key role to play in shaping the financial services of the future, whilst the scale and reach of our Group means you'll have many opportunities to learn, grow and develop.
We keep your data safe. So, we'll only ever ask you to provide confidential or sensitive information once you have formally been invited along to an interview or accepted a verbal offer to join us which is when we run our background checks. We'll always explain what we need and why, with any request coming from a trusted Lloyds Banking Group person.
